Center Turns Meth Addicts Away
Metropolitan Assessment and Treatment Services (MATS) in Bernalillo County, New Mexico is no longer admitting methamphetamine addicts for detox if crystal meth is their only addiction. However, poly-substance abusers can be treated as long as meth is a secondary addiction. Citing increased demand and $250,000.00 in city funding cuts as the reasons, MATS is offering methamphetamine addicts vouchers for free outpatient services at The University of New Mexico, Albuquerque Metro Central Intake.
Increased Demand
What is unfortunate is that methamphetamine addiction is at epidemic proportions nation wide and in today's economic climate, bureaucratic budget cuts can mean death sentences for drug addicts in need of help.
To complicate matters, historically, addiction tends to spiral out of control in bad econimic times. Unemployment breeds self-esteem issues, guilt and shame, which are contributing factors to any addiction. In a perfect world there would be budget increases for substance abuse rather than budget cuts during bad economic times.
