Methadone Maintenance Therapy

Methadone Maintenance

When a heroin addict desperatley seeks help from a methadone clinic he is routinely placed on a voluntary, 21-day dose reduction program that includes no real counseling or therapy of any type.

This voluntary dose reduction amounts to nothing more than self-medication, because if the addict tells the clinic the withdrawal symptoms are becoming too unbearable and he expresses a desire to increase his dosage, rather than reduce it, he is almost instantly placed on Methadone Maintenance Therapy (MMT).

A Life Sentence
Once on Methadone Maintenance Therapy, addicts find themselves imprisoned in a bureaucratic nightmare that sometimes means a life sentence at a methadone clinic. Methadone addicts walk into the same depressing room each morning; wait in single file for their chance to talk with a faceless nurse behind bulletproof glass, just to receive a cup of juice which enables them to survive the day. And they will do the same thing tomorrow and the next day.

There are thousands and thousands of men and women who are forced to participate in this bureaucratic ritual every single day - week after week - month after month - year after year and possibly for the rest of their lives.
